Skilled Independent
This category is for applicants who are under 45 years of age with recognised skills and Recent Work Experience who do not have a close relative in Australia who can act as a sponsor. To be granted a visa, applicants must score 120 points.
Skilled Designated Area (Provisional)
This category is for skilled applicants who are unable to meet the criteria for a permanent visa and who can be sponsored by a non-dependent child, parent, brother or sister, neice or nephew, aunt or uncle, first cousin or a grandparent. There is no points test for this cateogry.
Skilled Australian Sponsored
This category is for applicants who are under 45 years of age with recognised skills and Recent Work Experience and who can be sponsored by a non-dependent child, parent, brother or sister, neice or nephew, aunt or uncle. To be granted a visa applicants must score 110 points.

Skilled State Territory Nominated
This category is for applicants who are able to meet the basic requirements under the Skilled Independent category but not the passmark and requires sponsorship from a participating State or Territory who will assess your commitment to reside in the State or Territory and whether your skills are in demand.
Skilled Independent Regional
This provisional category is for skilled people who are unable to meet the passmark for a permanent visa and who wish to live and work in a regional or low growth metropolitan area in Australia. You must be sponsored by a participating State or Territory government.
Skill Matching
This category is not points tested and has been designed to overcome skill shortages by placing an applicant's details on a Skill Matching Database for 2 years. The database is made available to the State and Territory governments and employers who may then nominate an applicant for migration.
