Spouse/De facto Spouse
This category is for applicants who are either married or intend to marry before the visa is granted or who have been in a defacto relationship for a minimum of 12 months before the application is lodged with an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand Citizen.
This visa is a two stage process - you apply for two visas (temporary & permanent spouse visas) by lodging one application. If the visa is granted, you will be a temporary resident for 2 years, and if the relationship continues, you will be granted permanent residency approximately 2 years after the original application was lodged.

Prospective Marriage (Fiancé)
This category is for a fiancé of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand Citizen and who intend to marry in Australia within 9 months of the visa being granted. Following the marriage ceremony, and before this visa expires, you must apply in Australia for a Spouse temporary visa and you will be eligible to apply for a permanent spouse visa on the basis of your genuine and continuing relationship with your spouse after a period of two years.
Interdependent Partner
This category includes but is not restricted to, same sex couples who must provide evidence of mutual commitments to a shared life within their relationship for a minimum of 12 mths. |
